SONORAN DESERT TORTOISE

$25.00

The Sonoran Desert tortoise is a large, high-domed land tortoise native to the rocky slopes and washes of southern Arizona and Sonora, Mexico. Its shell ranges from horn to orange-brown, gray-brown, or nearly black, marked with distinct growth rings, while the underside is typically tan or yellow. Stout, elephantine hind legs and flattened, heavily scaled forelimbs suited to digging give it a distinctly armored, deliberate look.

The species was formally split from the Mojave desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizii, in 2011 and named for the late herpetologist David Morafka. It occupies the rugged bajadas and mountain foothills east and south of the Colorado River, a very different terrain from the flatter valley habitat favored by its Mojave relative, and is the tortoise most often encountered in the hills around Tucson.
