SUN SPIDER

$25.00

The sun spider, also known as the camel spider, wind scorpion, or solifugid, is one of the Sonoran Desert's most misunderstood arachnids. Despite its fearsome appearance and reputation, it is neither a true spider nor a true scorpion, belonging instead to its own order, Solifugae, whose name comes from Latin words meaning those that flee from the sun, a nod to the animal's strictly nocturnal, heat-avoiding habits.

Its most recognizable feature is a pair of oversized, powerful jaws called chelicerae, used to seize and crush prey. A second pair of long, leg-like sensory appendages called pedipalps can make the animal appear to have ten legs at a glance, though true sun spiders, like all arachnids, have only eight.
