Saguaro Cactus

$25.00

No plant is more closely tied to the look of the Sonoran Desert than the saguaro. A mature plant can stand 40 feet tall or more, supported by a ring of woody internal ribs beneath a pleated, accordion-like skin that lets the whole trunk expand as it soaks up water after a rain. A fully hydrated saguaro can weigh nearly two and a half tons.

Getting there takes patience most living things don't have. A two-year-old saguaro may stand barely a quarter-inch tall, and the plant often won't grow its first arm until it's 75 to 100 years old — if it grows one at all. Many of the oldest, most iconic multi-armed saguaros seen across southern Arizona are well over a century old.
