PALO VERDE BEETLE

$25.00

The palo verde beetle, also called the palo verde root borer, is one of the largest beetles in North America, with adults reaching up to three and a half inches in length. Its dark brown to black body, long antennae, and spiny thorax give it a startling, almost prehistoric appearance, and its sudden summer appearance around porch lights has earned it a reputation as one of the most talked-about insects of the Arizona monsoon.

For over a century, the species was misidentified in the scientific literature as Derobrachus geminatus, a closely related but distinct beetle, until it was formally described and separated under its own name, Derobrachus hovorei, in 2007.
