Organ Pipe Cactus
Where a saguaro grows a single thick trunk and sends arms branching out from it, the organ pipe cactus skips the trunk entirely. Five to twenty slender, ribbed stems rise straight up from the ground in one cluster, each one reaching toward 20 feet or more, together giving the plant its name: a tight bundle of pipes that really does call to mind an old pipe organ.
It's the second-largest columnar cactus in the United States, outsized only by the saguaro itself, and just as slow and deliberate a grower. A stand of organ pipe can take decades to fill out into the dense, many-armed cluster most visitors picture.
