JAVELINA

$25.00

The javelina, or collared peccary, is one of the desert Southwest's most familiar mammals, common throughout much of Arizona, including the Tucson area. It looks much like a small wild pig, with a bristly salt-and-pepper coat, a pale band of hair across the shoulders that forms its namesake collar, and a pig-like snout. Despite the resemblance, javelinas are peccaries, a distinct New World family, not true pigs, which are an Old World species introduced to North America.

Javelina bones are absent from Arizona's older archaeological sites, and early settlers rarely mentioned them, suggesting the species is a relatively recent arrival to the state. Today their range runs from below the Mogollon Rim across parts of New Mexico and Texas, south through Mexico and Central America and into Argentina.
