GILA WOODPECKER

$25.00

The Gila woodpecker is a medium-sized, brash, and often noisy woodpecker of the Sonoran Desert. Males and females share a zebra-striped black and white pattern across the back and wings, a plain tan-gray head and underside, and a stout, chisel-like bill. Males carry a small red cap on the crown that females lack, which is the easiest way to tell the sexes apart in the field.

Named for the Gila River Basin of Arizona and New Mexico, the species is closely tied to the saguaro cactus, though its range extends well beyond where saguaros grow, into desert riparian woodlands and even residential neighborhoods across the Tucson and Phoenix areas.
