GAMBEL'S QUAIL

$25.00

Gambel's quail is a small, round-bodied ground bird and one of the most familiar sights in Tucson-area yards and desert washes. Both sexes carry a distinctive teardrop-shaped black plume that curves forward from the crown, grayish plumage, chestnut flanks, and a yellowish belly. Males are the more striking of the two, with a black face bordered in white and a black patch on the lower breast that females lack entirely.

Named for the 19th-century naturalist William Gambel, the species is sometimes called the Arizona quail or desert quail, reflecting how closely it is tied to the state. It is easily confused with the closely related California quail, though the two rarely overlap in range and the male Gambel's quail's black belly patch is a reliable way to tell them apart.
