ENGELMANN'S PRICKLY PEAR

$25.00

Engelmann's prickly pear is the most widespread and recognizable prickly pear cactus in Arizona, built from flat, paddle-shaped pads called cladodes that stack and branch into sprawling, shrubby clumps. Individual plants have no central trunk, spreading instead at ground level as fallen or rooted pads take hold nearby, which lets an established clump eventually cover a considerable patch of ground.

The species is named for the German-American botanist George Engelmann and goes by many common names across its range, including cactus apple, discus prickly pear, and, in Mexico, nopal and tuna. It is one of sixteen Opuntia species found in Arizona and hybridizes readily with several of its relatives, which has made its taxonomy notoriously tangled.
