EL CORONADO SAGUARO MONSTRO
Out of thousands upon thousands of ordinary saguaros rising straight and ribbed toward the sky, every so often one chooses a different shape entirely. Instead of a single growing tip, it unfolds into a wide, fan-like crest — hundreds of small pleats fused together, no two ever alike. Biologists call this cristation. The desert calls it a crowning.
Science has never settled on why it happens. A genetic accident, old lightning, a hard frost that turned the growing tip back on itself — all are offered, none are proven. The crested saguaro keeps its own counsel, and that silence is part of what makes it feel less like an anomaly and more like a presence: the one saguaro among hundreds of thousands that grew a crown instead of a column.
