SONORAN DESERT TOAD

$25.00

The Sonoran Desert toad, also known as the Colorado River toad, is the largest native toad in the United States. It is a heavy-bodied amphibian with smooth, leathery skin ranging from olive brown to dark green, often with a scattering of small brownish or orange spots. A large white or cream-colored wart sits at the corner of the jaw on each side, just below the prominent parotoid glands that run along the back of the head.

The species takes its common name from the Gila and Colorado River basins of the Southwest, where it was once widespread. It remains common through much of the Sonoran Desert, including the washes and canals around Tucson, though it has been extirpated from most of its historic range along the Colorado River itself.
