BLACK-TAILED JACKRABBIT

170,15 kr. DKK (plus tax)

The black-tailed jackrabbit is one of the largest North American hares and among the most familiar wild mammals of the Sonoran Desert, despite its common name suggesting a rabbit. True hares differ from rabbits in build and biology: jackrabbits are leaner and lankier, with disproportionately long ears and hind legs, and their young are born fully furred, eyes open, and mobile within minutes, unlike the blind, helpless newborns of true rabbits.

Its sandy-gray, dark-flecked coat blends into desert soil, while a black stripe runs down the back and a black-tipped tail flashes white underneath when the animal bolts. The oversized, black-tipped ears are more than a hearing tool: dense with blood vessels close to the surface, they work as radiators, dumping excess body heat into the air and helping the jackrabbit manage the desert's extreme daytime temperatures without sweating or panting.
