TARANTULA HAWK WASP

CHF 21.16

The tarantula hawk is one of the largest wasps in North America, with an iridescent blue-black body and bright burnt-orange wings that together form a warning display few desert predators choose to ignore. Females have distinctive curled antennae, while the straighter antennae of males mark the only sex incapable of stinging, since the stinger itself is a modified egg-laying organ that only females possess.

The most common tarantula hawk in the Sonoran Desert is Pepsis grossa, though the group also includes the related genus Hemipepsis. Although often associated with New Mexico, whose state insect is the tarantula hawk, the wasp is equally at home across Arizona, wherever desert tarantulas are common enough to support its unusual life cycle.
