HARVESTER ANT

CHF 21.15

Harvester ants, genus Pogonomyrmex, are large, reddish to dark brown ants best known for the wide, bare-earth circles they clear around their nest entrances, a feature that makes their colonies easy to spot across the Arizona desert. Of the roughly 22 harvester ant species found in the United States, several occur in Arizona, identifiable in part by a fringe of coarse hairs under the head, called a psammophore, that workers use like a bulldozer blade to push soil during nest excavation.

True to their name, harvester ants specialize in collecting seeds, which foraging workers carry back to the colony and grind into a bread-like paste stored in underground granary chambers for the whole colony to share.
