GREATER ROADRUNNER

CHF 21.16

The greater roadrunner is a large, ground-dwelling member of the cuckoo family and one of the most recognizable birds of the American Southwest. It carries streaked brown and black plumage above, a lighter throat, long blue-gray legs, bright yellow eyes, and a shaggy crest that it can raise or flatten. A long tail, held level or cocked upward, works like a rudder to help the bird change direction sharply while running at speed.

Its scientific name, Geococcyx californianus, translates roughly to Californian earth-cuckoo, though the bird ranges across Arizona and the rest of the arid Southwest into Mexico. It is also known regionally as the chaparral cock, paisano, or snake killer, and remains a familiar sight along desert roads and washes around Tucson.
