VINEGAROON
The giant vinegaroon, also called the whip scorpion or grampus, is one of North America's largest arachnids and the only member of its ancient order found in the United States. Despite a scorpion-like build, with heavily armored pincer-tipped pedipalps and a segmented body, it is only distantly related to true scorpions and carries no stinger or venom of any kind.
Its most distinctive feature is a long, thin, whip-like tail extending from the rear of the body, the origin of both its scientific order name, Thelyphonida, and its common name whip scorpion. Poor eyesight, despite eight eyes arranged around the head, means the vinegaroon relies almost entirely on its long, sensory front legs to feel its way through the dark.
